Part of my homework for my visual media class this week was to make a Lumiere video, as per the terms in the Lumiere manifesto. My video1 was of a hot water boiler boiling water.

This is the criteria for a Lumiere video:

  • 60 seconds max
  • Fixed camera
  • No audio
  • No zoom
  • No edit
  • No effects

While the Lumiere/realist style isn’t really my thing, I like my video a lot more than I thought I would initially!

  1. Let’s pretend that I have a “video” category rather than a “photos” one for this week! []

Roanne showed me this video of a man who turns fruits and vegetables into musical instruments. He has cucumber trumpets, radish and cabbage flute slides, mushroom, ostrich egg, carrot, broccoli, watermelon, pumpkin, burdock, and apple ocarinas, butterbur oboes, and other fruit and vegetable instruments. I was totally astounded when I saw this video; I had never imagined you could turn carrots into a pan flute and play songs with them!

I’m not a drinker, but even a non-drinker can appreciate this fantastic commercial for Carlton Draught!

Ah, priceless. Quite possibly my favorite ad ever!

Every girl wants to be seen as beautiful, no matter how small this desire may be. Perhaps it has been hardwired into a girl’s brain, or it has been drilled into a girl’s mind by society and the media. There are images of “beautiful” girls everywhere that are tall, thin, clear-skinned, and are so beautiful and so perfect that it seems as though they are too beautiful and too perfect to be true. And most of the time, they are, for the images the media projects to us of beautiful girls aren’t entirely real.

The beauty company Dove launched a campaign for real beauty to emphasize the fact that today’s standards of beauty set by media and society are not realistic standards at all. These standards are based off of images that are airbrushed and Photoshopped to the point where the final image bears few or no similarities to the model in the photo. The accompanying video for Dove’s campaign makes a powerful statement, and it really shows you how the image of beauty has been distorted by society today.

In light of last night’s Oscar festivities, I thought it would be appropriate to share a light-hearted parody of a movie that will never, ever make it to the Academy Awards (at least, not in this universe!)

Alice shared this YouTube video recently of a parody of the movie Twilight. My opinion of the Twilight series and movie is for another post, but this parody is pretty spectacular. Not only is it hysterical, but the settings and costumes are spot-on, and from a distance, the actors who play the Twilight characters in the parody have quite the resemblance to the actual Twilight actors! I’m not usually one for parodies, but this is definitely worth watching, especially if you need a laugh. Plus, it’s only about eight minutes long (the last minute is for the credits).
