The Future of This Blog

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this blog, and what direction I want its future to be in. On November 4, I put my blog on its third hiatus as of August. Considering I went from January – August with only a one-week hiatus in May, this says a lot about how my blogging habits aren’t working out with the demands of my personal life, and that some changes are necessary if I want to successfully continue blogging.

I have been doing lots of brainstorming/researching in the last couple of days, and I plan on doing loads more before I make any final decisions. I’m not totally sure where all of this planning will lead me, but I am excited to see what changes I decide upon and how they will help shape my blog. However, it is pretty safe to say that my blog will be experiencing a total and complete overhaul and will be newly relaunched in time for the new year. Relaunched with the possibility of a Twitter contest, perhaps…

I do know that I want to wrap up a year’s worth of blog entries somehow before I start my overhaul project, and all the changes I will need to make will probably result in a Maintenance Mode look until all the adjustments are completed. But I have plenty of time to figure this all out, and once I do, those that read this blog will be the first to know

I hate that this is becoming a semi-regular thing, but here goes:

I’m putting this blog on another hiatus.

It’s not something I particularly enjoy doing, especially since I just came back from a previous hiatus a month ago, but it’s what I feel is necessary to do right now. Something I thought I had under control has never been further from my control in my life, and something that made me happier than I’ve ever been in a long time has left me with a lot of questions that need answering and some soul-searching I need to do.

Real life takes priority over anything online, of course. I need time to focus on real life and all of the issues I am encountering, and I can’t afford to take time away from that to spend on this blog. So, once again I am going to be semi-MIA while I sort out my mess of a life. I’ll be around on Twitter and LiveJournal so I won’t be totally missing, but until I’ve managed to figure out a few things I’ll be laying (lying?) low in the blogosphere.

Capitalism and Cows

This semester I am taking a microeonomics course as well as a Russian history course. So when I found Capitalism and Cows: an explanation of the economics of capitalism by using cows and countries/corporations, it resonated with me on more than one level because it can relate to at least two of my courses!

Here are some of my favorite examples:

A JAPANESE CORPORATION — You have two cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. You then create clever cow cartoon images called Cowkimon(tm) and market them world-wide.

A SWISS CORPORATION — You have 5000 cows, none of which belong to you. You charge others for storing them.

A RUSSIAN CORPORATION — You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 12 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.

Yes, these statements about how various corporations would go about with cows in a capitalist way use stereotypes, but they are quite amusing!

Halloween

I have mixed feelings about Halloween, and I’m pretty apathetic about the “holiday” in general. I like the free candy aspect of it, but I dislike the need to come up with a witty and creative costume every year, as well as the fact that most girls use the holiday as an excuse to parade around in next to nothing in the name of wearing a “costume”.

Last year, my friend and I dressed up as Sarah and Bristol Palin and went trick-or-treating at international embassies. While that was fun and definitely something I will remember forever, embassy trick-or-treating wasn’t really something I wanted to do this year. And since I worked all during the day at my new job, by the time the evening rolled around I was exhausted and didn’t have the energy to go out anywhere.

I ended up staying in for Halloween with a friend. We watched Shaun of the Dead (my compromise on a scary movie, as I can’t watch horror films without having nightmares for weeks) and passed out candy to anyone that stopped by. It was a very nice, very low-key Halloween, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I would have if I had gone out partying instead. Some days, a night in with friends is so much nicer than going out with strangers!

Question of the Week: How did you spend Halloween this year?

Summary: As Shaun (Simon Pegg) vows to get his life back on track with his best friend Ed (Nick Frost), girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield), and step-dad Philip (Bill Nighy), he finds himself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and has to save the day, with comical and gory results

5 Words/Phrases: Great comedy; fantastic cast; Pegg and Frost work great together as a comedic duo; very welcome cameo appearance by Jessica Stevenson1; perfect mixture of comedy and gore

Most Impressed By: The strong supporting cast – Pegg may have had the lead role, but the movie was very much about the entire ensemble and they all worked very well together

Least Impressed By: …nothing!

Overall Rating: 9.5/10

iPhone Game Apps

This blog entry about free iPhone game apps is my follow-up post to iPhone Apps. Since none of the apps I listed in the other post were games, I thought I would do an entry related solely to (free) iPhone games!

Solitaire Free
I’ve always been a solitaire fan, and Solitaire Free is a great app for every solitaire geek. Not only does it has the traditional solitaire game with the option of drawing one card or three (Klondike Deal 1 or Klondike Deal 3), but you can also choose from variations of solitaire like Baker’s Game, Baker’s Game Easy, Demon, or Spiderette. My personal favorite is Demon.

FarmFrenzy
While the full version of FarmFrenzy is a paid app, the lite version is really good and I’m not even sure I would bother with the paid app since the lite one pretty much has all of the game’s features! It’s the quintessential farming game, where you raise geese and collect the eggs and send the eggs to refineries and cart off your goods to earn money. Along the way, you have to plant grass for geese to feed on, capture attacking bears that will eat your livestock, and raise other animals like sheep, cats, dogs, or even cows!

Tetris
I’m pretty sure this one needs no explanation.

Lemonade Tycoon
This, as far as I can tell, is exactly like the computer game version of Lemonade Tycoon. You set up a stand, order lemons, water, sugar, cups, and ice, and every day you sell lemonade to try and make a profit. When I first downloaded this app, I couldn’t believe that it was a free full version rather than a lite version because it seems like all games only give you a free lite trial!

Falling Gems
Falling Gems is quite similar to Bejeweled. You slide the gems so that you make a combination of 3 or more same-colored gems, but unlike Bejeweled, the combination doesn’t have to be in a straight line. It’s incredibly addictive and you can save all of your scores to create a high score scoreboard.

Last weekend, I fulfilled a two-year long dream to find the perfect pair of dark brown suede flat boots at an affordable price.

This dream began in the winter of 2007-2008. I was shopping in the shoes section of Macy’s, and I stumbled across a beautiful pair of dark brown suede flat boots. They were Steve Maddens and the shoe name was Tiana. I fell in love at first sight.

Unfortunately, the shoes were $100USD. There was no way I could justify paying that much for a pair of boots, no matter how much I loved them. So I reluctantly tried to put the thought of them out of my mind and went along my merry way empty-handed without the pair of beautiful boots.

I’ve been searching for that pair of boots, or a similar pair, ever since that winter. I just wanted a pair of dark brown suede flat boots with a slightly slouchy design that went up to just below my knees. I wanted to be able to wear them with straight leg jeans as well as with short skirts, as well as for them to be comfortable and affordable.

This past weekend, I finally found them. They may not be Steve Maddens, but I don’t care what brand it is, or what designer designed the shoe. The boots that I found are everything I wanted, and guess how much they cost?

$25USD.

I think even Amanda would be proud, all things considering1!

I have been a member of The Fanlistings Network since April 2006 and have been a category staffer at the network since December 2006. Through all of the ups and downs, I have thoroughly enjoyed being both a member and category staffer at the network. I’ve had a lot of good experience and memories as a staffer, and I’ve also made a number of really good online friends and have even had the pleasure to meet up with some of them in person. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and I have handed in my resignation from TFL staff.

There were a number of reasons behind this decision, but ultimately it came down to two factors: a growing lack of both interest and time. When I first joined staff, I was a junior in high school and what free time I did have, I was more than willing to spend it on the computer doing whatever I liked. Now that I am a sophomore in college, I hardly have any free time1. Between a full course load, two jobs, growing involvement in extracurricular activities, and real life people that I want to spend more and more time with, it’s just not feasible for me to continue working what is essentially another part-time volunteer job.

It took me a long time to come to the decision of resigning from staff, because staffing TFL is something I really enjoy doing and the group of both category and senior staffers at the network are a really fantastic bunch of people. But in the end, I decided that if I no longer enjoyed staffing the way I once did, then it was time to go. There was no sense in me maintaining my position and growing to resent it as yet another responsibility that I chose to burden myself with, or me remaining a staffer but no longer being able to do the job properly.

I will still be around the network and will be applying and maintaining for fanlistings as usual despite no longer being on TFL staff. I’m not quitting fanlistings altogether; I just won’t be around TFL in a staffing capacity any longer. And while it will be very strange at first, and I undoubtedly will miss being a staffer in the transition period from TFL staff to alumni, ultimately I think it is the right thing for me to do.

I have also quit the q*bee, but as I wasn’t really properly involved in the club from day one, it wasn’t that big of a surprise for me to decide to leave the club.
People of Walmart

I hate Walmart. Like, I hate Walmart with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns. My hatred for Walmart stems not from the people that shop there, but from the policies Walmart employs with their workers, company policies, and general state of existence. I have only been to a Walmart once in my life as I make it a point never to go in one if I can help it, and the one time I went inside one I felt like a little piece of me had died.

But anyway. As much as I dislike Walmart itself, I will say that there are plenty of very, very… well, interesting people that shop there. People of Walmart catalogs all of the very unusual, outrageous, and just plain weird sightings that occur in and around various Walmarts throughout the country. I’m not even sure what to make of some of these photos, but I will say that I am very wary of entering a Walmart ever again in fear of encountering these people in real life and having no idea how to react to the situation!

Summary: Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) runs his own bookshop despite his dislike of customers and employs former stress victim Manny (Bill Bailey) to help him run the shop, encountering many hilarious obstacles with the help of Fran (Tamsin Greig), the proprietor of the store next door

Rites of Passage

I never really experienced rites of passage that people typically do throughout childhood and adolescence. I had an unusual upbringing in the sense that I was consistently uprooted due to a number of overseas moves, which led to my general lack of knowledge/interest about these “traditional” rites of passage.

Here are a handful high school rites of passages I never experienced:

Graduating from primary/middle school in order to enter high school
I left my first middle school in the US at the end of sixth grade, which meant I missed out on the eighth grade graduation. At my new school in Australia, students graduated from primary school in year six and not year seven. I transferred to my Australian school at the beginning of year seven, so I had just missed out on graduation. The first time I ever graduated from anything was when I completed high school!

Sweet sixteen birthday party
My sixteenth birthday was a quiet and lonely affair. I had just moved to Chicago from Australia, and I didn’t know anyone in Chicago besides my immediate family. My sixteenth birthday “party” was comprised of myself, my mother, my brother, and a chocolate cake. It was nice, but definitely not the sweet sixteen bash many kids expect on their sixteenth birthdays.

Driver’s license at sixteen
I didn’t get my driver’s license at sixteen. Honestly, I was never bothered by this, I managed just fine without one. Besides, I think sixteen is too young to drive; the thought of the sixteen year olds I know on the roads scares me.

Getting my first car
This ties in with the whole driver’s license thing, for obvious reasons. However, I also have zero interest in getting a car of my own. The area I live in has good public transportation, and where I go to for college has excellent public transport. Ideally I’d like to live in a city like London, Paris, or Hong Kong after I graduate from college, all of which have phenomenal public transport and there is no need for a car. I don’t want to deal with car payments, insurance, maintenance, gas… it’s all money I’d rather not spend on something I don’t see as needing.

Getting my first job
Unlike most teenagers, I didn’t get my first job in high school. I was on a student visa in Australia so I legally was not allowed to work, and then my final two years of high school took so much time and energy out of me that I didn’t even want to think about a job. (I don’t count babysitting gigs as an “official” job.) I did get a job at college though, it just took me a little longer than most of my classmates to get the ball rolling on the job front.

Defining Yourself in a Relationship

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to answer all of the questions asked in last week’s Question of the Week post for today, so I’m postponing the answers until next Sunday. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I was watching a reality TV show the other day1 and the people behind the camera were asking a teenage girl to talk about herself. She had to give her stats, like her name and age, as well as several adjectives that she thought best described her. The first words that came out of her mouth were, “I’m a girl with a boyfriend.”

This, not surprisingly, caused my eyebrows to shoot up so high that they practically disappeared into my hairline. This girl thinks her relationship is so important, so relevant, and so pivotal in understanding how she is that she thinks it’s necessary for her to throw that out there as the very first thing she says about herself? Was there absolutely nothing else about her that was remotely interesting for her to talk about?

I think that it’s only necessary to talk about your relationship status as the first thing you say to someone if they’re trying to awkwardly hit on you but you’re taken or something. In a relationship or not, I certainly don’t tell people my relationship status right off the bat! I don’t think being in a relationship (or being single) should affect how you perceive yourself at all!

Question of the Week: Does being in or out of a relationship change the way you define yourself?

Can’t remember the name of it as I only watched it for about ten minutes before I changed the channel.

Tagline: A touch of romance. A touch of mystery. A touch of magic.

Pushing Daisies Season 2

Summary: The story of a piemaker, Ned (Lee Pace), who can bring the dead back to life and works with private investigator Emerson Cod (Chi McBride) to solve murder cases as well as running his bakery, The Pie Hole, with the help of waitress Olive Snook (Kristin Chenoweth) and Charlotte “Chuck” Charles (Anna Friel), Ned’s childhood sweetheart he brought back to life

5 Words/Phrases: Very visually bright and stunning with excellent costumes, quick and witty dialogue with moments of great comedic timing, good development of storylines introduced in season 1, sometimes a little too much going on in each episode to keep track of everything, satisfactory ending considering the early cancellation of the series

Most Impressed By: The interactions between Ned/Chuck/Olive/Emerson; the development of old characters and storylines; the closing narration in the last and final episode

Least Impressed By: Too many storylines at once at times; some characters/plot lines were introduced without any seeming relation to the rest of the episode/season

Overall Rating: 8.5/10

The lovely Krissy has given me the Beautiful and Gorgeous Blogger Award. Similar to the Kreativ Blogger Award, I have to list 7 things people might find interesting and pass the award along to 7 bloggers1. So, here we go!

7 Things People (May or May Not) Find Interesting

I have a fear of being submerged in water. I dislike going to swimming pools, beaches, and taking baths as a result. I don’t even like hot tubs all that much!

I dressed up as Sarah Palin last year for Halloween. My friend went as a pregnant Bristol Palin, using a towel tucked underneath her shirt to show a “baby bump.” Since we went trick-or-treating along Embassy Row in Washington, DC, there were some very interesting reactions to our costumes!

My three favorite chocolate things are: Toblerone, Kinder, and Tim Tams. Give me any of those three and I’ll be a happy camper. And if you give me all of them, you might just be my favorite person forever.

I have never had my hair highlighted or colored, and I don’t really see either happening in my future.

I live in dorm housing on my school’s campus. I don’t mind it all that much except for times when neighbors are currently having very loud sex… like they are now.

I’m allergic to 99% of all types of sunscreen.

I have hyper-extended knees and elbows.

7 Blogs I Find Interesting2

I got a manicure for the first time last week. While this photo is atrocious (sorry about that), it’s as good enough evidence as any that yes, I actually went to a salon and got my nails done. I wasn’t so sure about the color at first, since the particular shade of sapphire I chose is quite dark and looks black in dim lighting, but it’s really grown on me over the week. It’s quite nice having nicely painted nails – I honestly can’t remember the last time I had them!

It’s midterms this week for me, which means it’s a week of endless studying, writing papers, and not getting any sleep1. I have something due every single day this week for my classes, and I also have a few work commitments that I need to keep up with. How on earth I am going to survive this week in one piece without failing any of my classes is beyond me… but either way, I have to at least attempt to get through my week of hell successfully.

The one thing that is keeping me going is that my roommate and I have planned a shopping adventure as soon as we are both done with all of our midterms this week. Nothing like retail therapy to motivate you to get through a week of exam hell!

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice has been reinvented many, many times. Seth Grahame-Smith added zombie revisions to it in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and it’s also been retold in a Facebook version.

Now, there is a Twitter version of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Complete with @replies, #hashtags, and DMs, “Pride and Twitterverse” retells the classic tale of Lizzie Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy in tweets of 140 characters or less!

Even though these replies are late, I figure it’s better late than never, right?

If you could live anywhere for the rest of your life, where would it be?
Without a doubt, Hong Kong. It is my absolute favorite place in the world, and the one place I feel 100% comfortable in calling home. I’ve moved around a lot and spent a fair portion of my life growing up overseas, but Hong Kong is where I was born and it’s where home is for me.

When you were younger, what did you want to be?
What didn’t I want to be is probably the easier question! When it comes to career aspirations, it’s very much a “you name it, I’ve wanted to be it” type deal. I think the ones I stuck with for the longest was a translator/interpreter and a writer.

What’s the last nice thing that happened to you?
A lot of nice things have happened to me recently, which is a huge change from the run of bad experiences I had last month. I think the one that stands out the most is just knowing that I mean a lot to someone special. Ever since there’s been some drama in my circle of friends, it’s nice to know that there’s still someone that values me in their life.

What was your worst subject in high school?
Without a doubt, math. I’ve always been a good student, but math was always the class that very nearly killed me. It was always the class that threatened to lower my GPA and was the one I agonized over for hours. It was also the only class I ever needed a tutor for!

How often do you check your email?
I check it obsessive compulsively! I use the Gmail Notifier plugin for Firefox, so whenever I get a new email I get a notification and check my inbox immediately. I also have an iPhone, so I have constant access to my email 24/7. Maintaining a constant connection with your email inbox is not always a good thing, though…
